Expats require a residence visa to live in Dubai. While a residence visa is not the same as a work permit, it is usually sponsored by the company employing the expat. The residence visa is needed to open a bank account in the UAE, get a driving license and to register a car.
There are several types of residence visas for the UAE, all with different periods of validity:

Valid residence visa holders may sponsor a spouse and/or children providing they meet the minimum salary requirement of AED 3,000 per month (with paid accommodation) or AED 4,000 per month (without paid accommodation). Sponsoring a parent requires a higher minimum salary.
It is not possible to sponsor a boyfriend, girlfriend or common law partner; it’s necessary to have a marriage certificate as a proof of the relationship.

Note: An additional of AED 3,020 for every member of the family that the investor will sponsor.
An expatriate can sponsor a housemaid if the following conditions are met:
Salary: Sponsor’s monthly salary should not be less than 6,000 (without paid accommodation) or AED 5,000 (with paid accommodation).
Yearly fees: Sponsor should pay AED 5,360 as an annual fee at General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (DNRD).
Deposit: AED 2,020 should be paid in cash at DNRD after approval. This amount will be refund after Maid’s Visa cancellation and exit. AED 220 should be paid at DNRD as file opening fee.
The Sponsor should be resident in the UAE living with his /her family.
The housemaid and the Sponsor/spouse should not be related.
Deadline: Medical, Emirates ID and Visa stamping should be completed within 60 days from the date of Entry.
